Discover the foundations of a thriving edible garden in this practical, hands-on session. Learn about different types of garden beds — from raised beds to wicking systems — and explore their pros and cons to help you choose the best option for your space. We’ll cover how to prepare your beds to support healthy, productive plants: layering mulch, using the right fertilizers, understanding light needs, and setting up consistent irrigation. Then, we’ll dive into what truly makes a garden flourish — the living soil beneath it all. Explore soil biology and structure, how nutrients move through plants, and the role of photosynthesis in plant health.

You'll leave with both practical skills and a deeper understanding of the ecological processes that support vibrant, resilient gardens.

This session is facilitated by Gavin Collin, a passionate backyard gardener with years of hands-on experience in sustainable growing practices. He has co-led workshops on biodynamics and agroforestry alongside Kane Dabbouss, founder of Red Soil Organics. Gavin now brings his practical knowledge and collaborative spirit to Green Thumb Farm, continuing to inspire others through education and community engagement.
